Adele Rosemary Butman

September 19, 1931 — February 15, 2016

Adele Rosemary Landreville Butman, 84, of Woodland Hills, CA, the beloved wife, mother of six, and grandmother of three, passed away quietly on the morning of February 15, 2016.

Adele, the second-eldest of six children, was born in Argyle Minnesota to Adelbert Joseph Landreville and Laura Marie Capistran Landreville. Adele loved to dance and often drove into nearby Thief River MN with her sister Theresa to enjoy a Friday night dance. After graduating Moorhead High School, Adele went on to business school and a banking job in Chicago, sending much of her earnings home to her family in Minnesota. In Chicago, Adele was offered a modeling job but chose instead the even more exciting opportunity to drive to California with her brother Tom, where she met and married Donald Harvey Butman in 1957. Adele and Don bought their first and only home in the San Fernando Valley and together raised six children. Adele mothered countless other children working as a Teacher’s Aide and Playground Attendant at a special education school, retiring in 2001 after 22 years.

Adele was a woman of strength with a big heart. She loved art and when time permitted, Adele sketched or painted with freedom and flair, a skill she passed on to her children. She was an avid storyteller and loved to write letters and did so with the same flair and flamboyance as in her artwork. Adele had a love for animals and life, and raised, loved, treated, nurtured and cared for many stray animals, pets and plants. With a passion for cooking, Adele offered to friends and anyone visiting, a warm cake, a fresh-baked cheesecake or a delicious homemade meal straight out of the oven. She had a love for life, always wanting to be surrounded by family and friends. As an art art lover and artist herself, she admired exotic designs and bright vibrant colors, with her favorite color being Red – a color which exemplified her strength of spirit, determination, and huge heart.

A Devout Catholic, Adele was a Founding Member of St. Bernadine Church where she attended weekly mass and where all of her children were baptized. Adele is survived by her husband, Don of 58 years, and children Tina, Sheri and her husband Norm, Darryl and his wife Kathleen, Diane, Lisa and her husband Steve, and Suzanne; and grandchildren Michelle, Jackson, and Gigi; and her sisters Theresa, Gladys, and Olive, and brothers Tom and Louie. Her whole family mourns her deeply.

Funeral mass for Adele was held on February 20, 2016, at St. Bernadine of Siena Catholic Church in Woodland Hills, CA, officiated by Father McNamara. Burial services followed mass at Oakwood Memorial Park in Chatsworth, where Adele will eternally lay in peace under a beloved and beautiful Silk Tree which will blossom as the Lord rises at Easter.
