Conrad Paul Nervig, or “Paul” as everyone called him, was born in Ames, Iowa on December 22,1929 to Morrill and Maylo Nervig. Paul grew up in Slater, Iowa graduating high school and enlisting in the National Guard in 1948 where he was a marksman and became a Sergeant E-5. He was honorably discharged in 1956. Paul had a gift for baseball and played on the semi-professional team, the Slater Nighthawks while also working as an engineer at the John Deere Company. Paul has always been known for his other gift, the gift of gab, and romanced a beautiful young lady, Pauline Jones, talking her into marrying him in October of 1950. They started a family two years later with their first born, DeAnn. As the job prospects started to wane in Iowa and the gray skies started to form, he packed up his young family and moved to sunny California in 1956.
In 1958 Paul and Pauline had their second child, Denis and in 1961 moved to their forever home in Simi Valley. There, Paul became a founding member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church, played in church baseball leagues, coached his son in baseball, umpired park district games and volunteered for outreach programs at Our Savior.
Paul and Pauline loved to travel. They took their children tent camping at very young ages. They loved the outdoors and would see all but one of the continental United States. They purchased a large RV and travelled to many national parks making wonderful friendships with folks across the country. Paul and Pauline were also involved in square dancing. Paul was a member of the A Square D club where he and his wife served as directors and board members and managed multiple national square dance conventions.
As an engineer making guidance systems for rockets, as contracts finished, he would find himself working for several other aerospace companies such as Rocketdyne, McDonnell Douglas and Hughes helicopter. Paul retired from the aerospace industry in 1993.
Retirement was only the beginning of his passion project: golf. After his “retirement” Paul started working as a Marshall at the Simi Valley Golf Course. He shared his passion with anyone who would listen. He and a few of his friends started the Simi Valley Senior League with only 40 members and with his involvement it grew to over 250 active members over 25 years.
Paul was a man involved in his community, whether it was through sports, family or church he connected to us all. He has left this world having touched many people’s lives with his loud laugh, thirst for adventure and his quest for the next round of golf. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Clark and his wife Pauline. He is survived by his children, DeAnn and Denis, his grandchildren Jennifer, Andrew, Madison and Lucas, and his great -grandchildren Kailey, Austyn, Collin and Caprica.
