David Earl Maas

David Earl Maas was born in San Diego. He graduated from Hoover High School and attended community college. His life-long love of dirt bikes and motocross racing began at an early age .He loved to ride and race. His favorite tracks were Carlsbad and Saddleback.

He made numerous friends in the motocross world; was mentored by Marty Moates: and even met his wife Donna on the rode to Daytona Supercross as a mechanic for Jim “Holleywood” Holley. He loved going to Supercross, Arenacross and the outdoor Nationals. He was a “true” friend to so many. He still has friends from elementary school and high school that he stayed in contact with. He made the effort to just call people to see how they were doing or to help them through rough times.

He and his wife, Donna Sue Ellis were married on February 14, 1990. He was a romantic; proposed at the Eiffel Tower in Paris; and chose Valentine’s Day for their wedding. They even had a white horse and carriage for their wedding.

He loved to travel. He went around the world with motocross and his wife with national tours of Broadway musicals. David loved music especially rock and metal. Donna had a design business and they used to “hang” at Gizzaries, Whiskey, Rainbow Room, and other clubs in Hollywood. He had numerous friends in rock bands.

He loved THE RAIDERS. Was a longtime fan. He attended many games and was “The Warlord”. He also had many friends in the Raider Nation!

He, Donna and Donna’s older daughter, Aliza Washabaugh Durand survived 9/11 at ground zero! They were supposed to have breakfast at Window’s of The World in the North Tower, WTC, that very morning.

He owned his own electrical contracting business, D-G Electric, for 26 years.

He was a great father. He loved taking his three kids Nikki Jacqueline (age 11), and twins Matthew David and Michael Anthony Maas (ages 10) to parks, beaches, theme parks, bike riding and for ice cream!

David was a fighter and survivor. He fought a long battle with a very rare form of mantle cell lymphoma. He is the only know survivor of this rare disease. He was named Superman by one of his doctors and was presented with Superman shirts and capes by the doctor and nurses. He became friends with all in the hospital and oncology office. He passed away from a stroke surrounded by family and dear friends.

He is survived by brothers Michael Maas and Robert Maas, and sister Iona Maas of San Diego. He is also survived by his Godmother Donna Weydert, dozens of aunts, uncles and cousins in Iowa as well as cousins in San Diego and San Jose.

He was valiant and will be missed by all.
