Listen to Obituary

"It is with deep sorrow and great love that we announce the passing of David Edward Wendler, who passed away peacefully on the morning of April 2, 2026, at the age of 90.

David was born on September 1, 1935, in Collinsville, Illinois, to Otto and Eleanor Wendler. He grew up in Collinsville before later moving to Los Angeles, California, and lived a life marked by hard work, hunting, humor, and a deep love for his animals, family, and friends.

David lived a remarkable life of adventure and accomplishment. He worked for a time as a stuntman, raced horses, and became widely respected as one of the most well-known huntsmen in America, earning the admiration of many through his skill, knowledge, and lifelong passion for hunting and working with animals.

A proud veteran of the United States Army, David carried the values of discipline, service, and quiet strength throughout his life. He was known for his generosity, patience, and willingness to help others, especially when it came to training and caring for animals. Whether working one of the two ranches, hunting, sharing stories, or sitting around the punch bowl after a hunt with friends, he made people feel welcomed and valued.

He is survived by his children, Colton and Carey Wendler; grandchildren Shea, Reagan, Michael Grant, David Cody, and Steven Kyle; siblings Crawford and Darlene; and many extended family members and lifelong friends who will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his siblings Leroy Don, Marvin, Fay, and Dixie, as well as Michael Caroline Frederick, who passed away in April 2025 at the age of 82, and who was formerly married to David and was the mother of his daughter, Carey.

Much to the joy and peace of his family, David accepted Jesus Christ into his heart before his passing. His faith brought comfort in his final days and remains a source of hope for those who loved him.

A memorial service will be held on May 16, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Rose Family Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Ducks Unlimited, where David was a lifelong member, or that those wishing to honor his memory simply spend time with family, lend a hand to a neighbor, or enjoy the outdoors the way he always did.

“May your belly never grumble,

May your heart never ache,

May your horse never stumble,

 And your cinch never break.”

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered."
