Joseph Robert “Bob” Stahley of Westlake Village passed away on May 30, 2026, at the age of 88.
Born on August 21, 1937, in Erie, Pennsylvania, to Joseph and Mary Stahley, Robert pursued a lifelong commitment to education and scholarship. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from SUNY Fredonia, a Master of Arts degree from Penn State, and a Ph.D. from UCLA.
Throughout his distinguished academic career, Robert taught at a variety of institutions, including Brighton High School in Rochester, New York; Cal Poly Pomona in Pomona, California; California State University, Northridge; and Pierce College in Woodland Hills, California. Most notably he taught at Los Angeles City College for 23 years from 1975-1998. He was a professor and the Cinema/TV department chair. Significantly, this is where he met his wife, Ginger. His dedication to teaching and learning left a lasting impact on countless students and colleagues.
Before entering academia, Robert explored a career in broadcasting and the performing arts. He appeared as an actor at the Erie Playhouse and worked as an announcer for WIKK/WICU Radio in Erie, Pennsylvania, and WHEC in Rochester, New York.
Outside of his professional pursuits, Robert had a deep love of horseback riding and enjoyed riding throughout the United States.
Robert was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 35 years, Ginger Russell-Stahley.
He is survived by his son, Joseph Stahley of West Hollywood, California, and his sister, Patricia Stahley of Millsboro, Delaware.
Robert will be remembered for his intellect, curiosity, dedication to education, and the many lives he touched throughout his remarkable life.
