Lucille Ault Ballard

August 17, 1925 — March 4, 2024

Lucille “Lucy” Ballard, 98, passed away on March 4, 2024, in Thousand Oaks, CA. She was born August 17, 1925, in Glencoe, OH, the daughter of Ralph and Della Ault. She was a resident of Thousand Oaks for 62 years. After graduating from East High School in Baltimore, MD, Lucy completed nurse’s training at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore. Her nursing career began in Tacoma, WA where she worked at Tacoma Indian Hospital. Lucy later went to Albuquerque, NM to work in the VA Hospital, where she met and married her husband of 60 years, Roy “Jake” Ballard.


In 1968 Lucy re-started her career as a nurse at the California Lutheran University Student Health Service. In 1996, she became an Honorary Alumna of CLU. Her service to CLU spanned 35 years, with a 2-year break to join Jake in Saudi Arabia. While there, she worked in the Health Department at the American Embassy.


Lucy served her community in numerous ways, including as a Conejo Valley Hospital Volunteer, PTA member, Community Concert president, Conejo Valley Historical Society member, Women of the Evangelical Church in America, and starting the Healing Ministry at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.


Lucy Ballard is survived by her children: Nancy Webster of Fairfax, VA; Thomas Ballard (Sarah) of Niceville, FL; Richard Ballard (Patti) of Alexandria, VA; Marci Detmer (Christopher) of Lyons, KS; and Melissa (Leesi) Nickles (Doug) of Thousand Oaks, CA; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandson.


She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her siblings Frank and Virginia Ault; her son, Stephen Ballard; her son-in-law, Burt Webster; a grandson, and four great-grandchildren.


Arrangements have been made through Rose Family Funeral Home. A service celebrating Lucy’s life will be held at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church 1 W Avenida De Los Arboles, 91360, Thousand Oaks on Friday July 5 at 1:30 pm. Private interment will be at Pierce Brothers-Valley Oaks Memorial Park, Westlake Village.


Lucy asked that donations be made to her favorite charities: Shriners Hospital for Children, Tunnel to Towers, or the charity of your choice.
