Norm was born in the northwestern rural town of Pocahontas, Iowa, the third child of Jerry and Abilena Hotovec.
He was an alter boy from an early age and attended Pocahontas Elementary School and attended Pocahontas Catholic high school and lettered in Basketball.
Growing up in a small town in Iowa, was where he learned the valuable lesson of hard work. His dad owned a Mobil gas station in town and as a teenager, Norm worked there after school and Saturdays.
He joined the Navy in 1955 and spent boot camp in Chicago, Illinois before being sent to California to serve as a jet mechanic. He was stationed in Miramar Naval Base.
He found a job working in a Chevron station in Woodland Hills and was married a year later.
After working in the station for a few years, he started working in the construction field as the general manager He worked for a few companies over his 63 years in the business.
His hobbies were taking care of a small backyard garden, barbaqueing, fishing, camping, vollyball and baseball.
