Peter William Means

Peter “Pete” Means, 81, was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, friend, entrepreneur, and a devoted member of the Ventura County community.

Born in Orange, New Jersey, in 1945 to Fred and Eilene Means, Pete grew up in Springfield, Vermont, alongside his sisters Rickie and Merrie. He was a Boy Scout, high-school band member, ski jumper, and maker of lifelong friendships. He later attended Dartmouth College, where he studied business finance and discovered an early passion for computer technology.

Pete built a successful career in technology, business development, and sales management that took him around the world. He ultimately fulfilled a longtime dream as a founding father and CEO of NovaStor Corporation, a security software company whose success reflected both his vision and the dedication of the team he was proud to lead.

His greatest joy, however, was his life with Sue, his beloved wife of 34 years and the love of his life. Together they built a warm, close-knit family in Simi Valley and Ventura County, embracing children, grandchildren, friends, and countless dogs along the way.

After retiring, Pete gave generously of his time to others. He served on the Council on Aging, delivered meals and companionship through Meals on Wheels, chaired the board of KCLU public radio, and supported the Samaritan Center, Food Share Ventura County, and the American Cancer Society. Whether walking through his neighborhood or around Westlake, he was affectionately known as “the dog whisperer” or “Dr. Doolittle,” with a gift for making every dog—and every person—feel instantly at ease.

Pete was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Eilene; his infant twin sister, Pamela; his daughter, Kim; and stepchildren Kristin and Richard. He is survived by Sue; his son, Christopher; stepchildren Stephanie, Robin, Brian, and Tyson; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held at home, in the yard Pete so loved. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to one of the organizations he proudly supported.

Pete liked to joke about being a man of small stature, but he was truly a giant with a huge heart. He loved deeply, laughed fully, and was much loved in return. He will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
