Robert Merle “Bob” Singer, 93, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2025, in Simi Valley, California. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, educator, veteran, and friend, Robert lived a life marked by service, integrity, and deep commitment to those around him.

Born on September 22, 1931, in Deadwood, South Dakota, Robert grew up amid the rugged beauty of the Black Hills. He began his education at Cleghorn Canyon Elementary School and later attended Rapid City High School. His passion for learning and leadership led him to Black Hills State University, where he earned his teaching credentials. He went on to earn a Master’s Degree in School Administration from the University of Redlands in California.

Robert’s life was one of adventure and purpose. After completing his studies, he embarked on a journey that would shape both his career and family life. Alongside his beloved wife Audrey and their young son Alan (Jay), Robert moved to Guam to begin his teaching career. Their two-year stay in the tropics marked the beginning of his lifelong dedication to education.

Upon returning to the U.S., the Singer family settled in San Bernardino, California. There, Robert dedicated over three decades to public education as a teacher, coach, and school administrator within the San Bernardino City Unified School District. His impact extended beyond the classroom—he mentored students both on the field and in life. He retired in 1995, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, excellence, and leadership.

Before his career in education, Robert served honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War. As a squad leader and staff sergeant with S2 intelligence responsibilities, he demonstrated exceptional bravery and leadership. For his valor in combat, he was awarded the Silver Star—one of the nation’s highest military honors.

Robert’s love for sports began early, playing multiple sports throughout high school and college. That passion continued as he coached student-athletes during his educational career. In retirement, he remained active, golfing throughout Southern California and the Black Hills, or fishing the peaceful waters of Slate Creek.

A talented woodworker with an eye for detail, Robert crafted many beautiful pieces over the years—treasures now displayed in the homes of friends and family as lasting testaments to his skill and generosity.

Above all else, Robert cherished time with his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Audrey; his son Alan (Jay) Singer and wife Alannah; daughters Jane Singer and Barbara Lemoine; grandsons John Singer and Aiden Lemoine; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members who were touched by his warmth and wisdom.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Alyce Singer, and brothers Richard (Dick) Singer and Rexford (Doug) Singer.

Robert will be remembered not only for what he accomplished but for who he was—a man who placed great importance on family and friendship, who led by example with quiet strength, and who showed others how to live honorably through every chapter of life.

Services and visitation will be held at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home in Rapid City, South Dakota on July 24th from 4:00–6:00 p.m.A graveside memorial service celebrating Robert’s life will be held on July 25th at Elm Springs Cemetery in Elm Springs, South Dakota from 10:00–11:00 a.m.

May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and continue to inspire all whose lives he touched.
