Wendell Durrant, a long time Chatsworth resident and active community member, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, October 29, 2015. He was born in Trenton, Missouri May 28, 1938. The family later moved to Kansas City, Kansas where Wendell attended school. He enjoyed education and continued his studies late into adulthood.
Wendell is survived by his loving wife Diane, four daughters, Shardell Cavaliere of Simi Valley; Sheryl Farrar of Kansas City, Kansas; Leesa Durrant and Allison Durrant, both of Chatsworth; many grandchildren, great-children and lots of loving extended family.
He retired after 33 years with Litton/Northrup Grumman where he worked on the design of Communication, Command and Control Systems for the US Military and NATO. He also worked on various contracts with Australia, Italy, Canada, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan and Iran. He was a member of the Litton Management Club for 25 years and is a past President of that organization.
Wendell enjoyed being an active community member. He was a visionary leader with the Devonshire Volunteer Surveillance Team (VST) since its inception in 1992 and held a number of important positions on its' Board of Directors. Wendell was President of the VST for 15 years.
He was an active member since 1990 of the City of Los Angeles Community Emergency Response Team and worked with first responders during the Northridge earthquake and Santa Susanna fire.
He was an active member of the Chatsworth Community Coordinating Council; a past member of the Council District 12’s Citizen Advisory Committee and was a committee member during the process to revise the Los Angeles City Charter.
Wendell served a total of 7 years on his Rockpoint Homeowner’s Board of Directors and held the positions of President and Vice President during that period.
Wendell enjoyed auto racing - winning many championships with his modified stock car at Saugus Speedway, eventually moving up into the NASCAR Winston Cup Series that raced on the Southwest Tour.
Wendell and his wife Diane enjoyed horse-racing, traveling, playing poker, church and being grandparents.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 4th at 10:00 am at Wellspring Foursquare Church, 11451 Woodley Avenue, Granada Hills, California. Interment will be at Oakwood Memorial Cemetery in Chatsworth.
